Black Mold

Black mold has been in the news often, always with negative implications related to causing health problems. It can be called toxic black mold, black mold, or other names, but the fact of the matter is that not all black molds are dangerous, and other colors of mold can cause health problems as well. The Stachybotrys mold is the main culprit when it comes to toxic black mold, but all toxic molds have something in common and it is not the color. Toxic molds release toxins that can be extremely harmful, especially in anyone who does not have a strong immune system, such as infants, children, the elderly, and people with certain medical conditions. Any mold can also cause an infection, which is caused by the mold actually growing in or on the body. The main problems with toxic molds come from the toxins released, and mold infections are very rare.

Mold of all colors, including black mold, can be classified into three distinct hazard types, depending on their health risks. These hazard classes are named A, B, and C. Hazard class A molds are considered toxic or dangerous molds for health reasons, and includes the famous toxic black mold. Some molds in this class do not create toxins but may pose a high risk for mold infections instead which can cause severe health problems. If these molds are found in any building, whether it is a home, office, or factory,
mold remediation should be done immediately. Molds in the category of Hazard Class B pose some health risks, and can cause allergic reactions in humans. The Hazard Class C group of molds does not usually pose any health risks to humans, but this does not mean that these molds should be left alone. All of the molds, regardless of the hazard class, can cause damage to the structure of your home and cause you to need expensive repairs. For this reason alone any mold contamination found in your home should be properly taken care of and removed.

Black mold is not the only type of mold that can be dangerous. There are many molds that fall in a Hazard Class A or B that are not black, but instead may be green, gray, white, brown, or other colors. Cladosporium is a mold which can appear as black mold, but it also may be brown, green, or gray, and this mold is considered non-toxic, but may be classified as a Hazard Class B or C depending on the specific type, because it can cause some health issues. These usually include allergy symptoms and other symptoms that are not serious in healthy individuals.

Aspergillus is another mold which may appear black, green, yellow, gray, white, or brown. This mold can be considered toxic, because mold toxins may be released. This
mold also poses an infection risks for people who are not healthy. Aspergillus mold is considered a Hazard Class A or B, depending on the specific mold species.

Stachybotrys mold is the mold species that has received so much bad press in the last few years. Considered one of the most serious toxic molds, Stachybotrys always appears black, and this is why many people are fearful of all black molds. It is considered a Hazard Class A, and should be immediately detected and cleaned up, using the proper safety equipment. Professional mold remediation personnel should be used, to ensure thorough detection and removal, and one company stands out as the best in this profession. Olympian offers home mold testing kits, home mold inspections, home mold detection, and home mold remediation
options, giving you the assurance that your home is safe for you and your family to live in.

Ulocladium is another black mold which is not toxic. This mold may also appear gray instead of black, but it may cause allergic reactions in some humans. The same is true of Alternaria mold, and these two molds have a very similar appearance making it hard for you to tell them apart. If you think you may have a mold problem, call Olympian (1-866-476-2056) to get a home mold testing kit or home mold inspection, so that you can determine if there is a problem and the ways to resolve these problems found. Not all black molds are toxic, and mold of other colors may pose a bigger threat than non toxic black mold. Toxic molds may vary in color, but they all release toxins that can cause many health problems and should be cleaned and removed immediately.
